Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread

While our diet doesn’t allow for a lot of bread, there’s always room for some. And if I’m going to make bread, I want it to be homemade so I know exactly what ingredients I’m putting into it.

It always amazes me how long items can stay on the shelves at the store due to all the processed ingredients and additives that are in the food. You know it’s fresh when it only lasts a few days! Also, as I have spoken about before, we deal with soy allergies here. So finding bread on the shelf that is soy-free isn’t an easy task.

How long does homemade bread stay fresh?

For the best texture, you’re looking at a maximum of around 3 days or so. It really all depends on how well you keep it in storage and sealed out of the air. Fresh air is your enemy when it comes to keeping bread soft!

Can you freeze bread for later?

You bet. As long as you have a freezer-safe bag, you should be able to freeze the bread for later. I like to actually slice it up into slices and store it in the freezer so that I can unthaw the amount of bread that I need rather than the entire loaf.

Ways To Use Homemade Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread

I might have mentioned a time or two that while I am careful how much bread I eat, I am a huge fan of bread because it’s versatile in making dinnertime or lunch so delicious. I do love the taste of bread and I also love how a fresh-baked loaf of bread can make my entire house smell amazing and delicious.

If I could bottle up that scent and have it all the time, I would!

Since it’s a simple bread recipe, it also means that it’s simple to pair up and use with other food items as well. You can pack a lunch or have a delicious dinner at home with bread as the show’s main stair.

Some delicious recipes to pair with this simple bread recipe are:

Instant Pot Sweet & Spicy Egg Salad

Air Fryer Shredded BBQ Chicken Salad

Kids Animal Toast

Croissant French Toast

Blueberry Jam

Strawberry Chia Jam

Apple Butter!

Any type of shredded salad dish will work great to put in between two slices of warm bread! And if you’re all about that avocado and toast trending recipe, that works out great here, too. One of our favorites is homemade tuna salad! So good!

Ingredients to make Whole Wheat Bread

Just gather up the list of simple ingredients to get started!

How to make Homemade Wheat Bread

First, you need to microwave the milk for 15 to 30 seconds, depending on how cold the milk is. The milk should be warm to the touch, but not hot. The temperature should be between 100 to 110F.

Now add the honey to the milk and stir to dissolve it.

Then add the yeast to the milk and let it bloom for 5 minutes. At the end of the 5 minutes, the yeast should be frothy.

Now add the whole wheat and all-purpose flour, oil, and salt. Mix it with a wooden spoon till it comes together into a sticky dough.

After that, transfer it to a well-floured surface. You will need to knead it for 5 minutes till the dough is no longer sticky and is slightly elastic. It should spring back slightly when pressed with a finger.

After that place it in a well-oiled bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Let it rest for 90 minutes or until the dough is double its original size.

Once the dough has doubled in size, you will want to take it out of the bowl and dump it onto a well-floured surface. Gently press the dough into a rough rectangle shape.

For this step fold the top third of the long side of the rectangle down.

Then repeat the same with the short sides and finally bring the bottom third up to form an even rectangle. Pinch the top fold to seal the dough.

After that, lightly grease a 9×5 inch pan and place the dough in it. Spray the top of the dough and wrap it again with plastic wrap. Let it proof for another 45 to 60 minutes till it has risen at least 1 inch from the from of the loaf pan.

You will now want to make a vertical slit on top of the dough for even cooking.

Go ahead and preheat the oven to 375F. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes or until the dough has browned slightly and formed a light brown crust.

Now remove the bread from the pan and let it cool for at least one hour before slicing. Store in an airtight container.

As you can see, this bread recipe has minimal steps which means that it takes minimal effort from you. But even though it’s a simple recipe, it totally delivers on the taste!

Once I make this bread recipe, I can assure you that it’s pretty much gone before it’s even cooled down!

Tips for Making Homemade Bread

Even though it is whole wheat bread, we need to add a little bit of all-purpose flour to get the right texture. Whole wheat flour does not have as much gluten as all-purpose flour, so it ends up as a tough and dense loaf. The all-purpose flour is essential for a soft crumb texture. If you need gluten-free, feel free to adjust the recipe to meet your needs.

Also, you can use sugar or maple syrup instead of honey.

What toppings go great with the homemade whole wheat sandwich loaf?

And my list could go on and on. I still revert to the recipe that my mom used to make me for school each morning. She took a toasted slice of bread topped with melted butter and a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. Seriously – the best.
