How to Renew Yourself as a Stay At Home Mom
Stay At Home Moms (SAHM) get a bad rap. This term brings up an image in most people’s mind of a woman who sits in her home wearing pajamas, watching television and eating bonbons. A SAHM is envisioned as a glorified house cleaner. Unfortunately, the work that goes into being a Stay At Home Mom is often, if not always, overlooked.
Being a SAHM is a joy few are blessed with, but it isn’t easy. The most interaction we get is from little ones, some who are not able to talk yet, at least until your husband arrives home from a long day at work. Days are incredibly stressful moving from one mess to another. You just want calgone to “take it away.” Some days you feel like you need more than one shower from the food you wear or the toilets you have cleaned.
We would not trade those moments. Those moments when we see our children walk for the first time, the first words said, first words read, the cuddles, or the learning. The messes are stressful, especially if you’re cleaning in circles, but those messes will eventually pass.
But, we still struggle. We miss relationships with other people who “get us” – but those people are in the same place as we are! How do we get to renew ourselves as a SAHM?
First, we need to remember that it is okay to need renew time. A lot of other moms might tell you that it is wrong to want time to yourself and that is a lie. Yes, God has given us our children, and yes, they are a blessing. But no, it is not bad to need to do something on our own. One suggestion is to try to go and do something by yourself one day a week. This doesn’t have to cost money – or even take you from home for long. Have a conversation with your husband about your needs and then try some of these suggestions:
- Go to the grocery store! You will spend less and be more efficient. Plus, you get some alone time. Want to make it a treat? Stop and get an ice cream cone or a drink to take to the store with you.
- Go for a walk by yourself. This 20 minute activity shouldn’t leave your husband flustered, but the exercise and fresh air will be good for you!
- Take a hot bath. Have daddy play with the kiddos and you just go enjoy the bath and maybe even a book. This is perfect for the nursing mom who can’t be away for long.
- Take a nap. Yes, I know, this lends to the theory that we have lives of leisure all day. Choose one day a week and close your eyes. Maybe even on Sunday when daddy might be home to help, too!
- Have time with other moms. There are lots of great ways to do this too:
- Ladies night once a month. Go have dinner – just the moms.
- Go for coffee on a Saturday morning.
- Go on a women’s retreat with your church.
- Go to children’s clothing sales with another mom. You were going to get the kids clothes anyway, right? Might as well make it an outing!
- Have a weekly phone call with a best friend.
- Have play dates! Even though the kids are there, it really helps!
- Take turn with mom friends babysitting for each other.
- Take time to get into God’s Word. This one tends to be more tricky, but make sure you are taking time to go to Bible Studies offered at your church like ladies Bible study groups, or go to bed a little early to make sure you get that time in.
