I’m always looking for a recipe that is fast and simple. I’ve found that with this drink recipe, it’s always a hit. The kids love the sweet flavor of the pineapple. I love the fact that it is packed with protein with a healthy dose of coconut milk and cottage cheese. 

A while back my husband got a great deal on pineapple and I canned and froze a bunch. of it up to have for later. So as I was thinking about smoothie recipes, I got the idea for a pina colada protein smoothie. 

Talk about a great way to load your body full of fruit, dairy, and protein! While this isn’t technically a meal replacement, it’s one of my favorite breakfast drinks. 

You are supposed to use frozen pineapple for this recipe, but I like to use fresh pineapple! It’s especially good when the pineapple is in season and ripened perfectly! 

Can you use other flavors of Premier Protein Shake?

You can. I lean towards vanilla for this recipe, but you can use chocolate or even caramel flavoring as well. Although other flavor options are available, I do not recommend banana flavor unless you’re really into bananas. The banana-flavored Premier Protein Shake has a seriously strong flavor that will overpower the taste of this recipe. 

Do I need to use ice cubes if I’m using frozen pineapple?

It’s up to you. The ice cubes will help freeze the smoothie and also help thicken it. You can choose to use them or not, up to you. The ice isn’t necessary for this recipe, but everyone has varying preferences, so it’s up to you.

I’ve made this delicious protein shake both ways, frozen pineapple only and frozen pineapple with ice cubes. Both to me are delicious and totally fine! 

Can you make this with other frozen fruit?

You bet your sweet pineapple you can! It’s such a simple recipe why limit the flavor? You can easily add frozen fruit like peaches, strawberries, blueberries, and any other type that you want. I’ve even done a frozen fruit medley and loved the flavor.

This is a simple way to use up some of that frozen fruit that might have been sitting in your freezer for a while.

How to make a Pina Colada Protein Smoothie

Take a blender and combine the frozen pineapples, ice cubes (if using), and cottage cheese.

Then add the coconut milk, coconut extract, and the premium protein shake.

Turn the blender on and blend on high.

It is best if you serve immediately.

Is this a good drink for kids?

Absolutely. My kids love smoothies and this recipe is no exception. They love it!  And if there are some days when I feel like they haven’t gotten in all their nutrients, this simple recipe is perfect for filling their tummies fast.

While my kids simply think it’s a sweet treat, but what I am actually giving them is a delicious and healthy treat. It’s a hearty recipe that will give fuel to their bodies to power through the day. 

Can you freeze this smoothie for later?

I honestly don’t recommend it. Since this smoothie is so simple to make,  I would recommend just making this fresh to enjoy. If you freeze foods that have a lot of dairy or other ingredients that don’t freeze well, there’s a high chance that it’s going to unthaw and have a unique texture. And I’m sure this texture will not be liked by anyone in your household. 

Since this recipe comes together so quickly, I recommend making it fresh when someone in the family is wanting to have it to drink. 

Why are there chunks of ice in my smoothie?

More than likely you didn’t give the blender long enough to chop up the ice. It’s also something that is going to happen if the ice is just too big for the blender to chop up or the blender didn’t run long enough. The only thing that you can do if you don’t want chunks of ice is to let the blender run a bit longer the next time that you make it.
