5 New Year’s Eve Ideas for Families with Teens

1. Prepare foods that your teen will love.

Your teen probably loves sweets and junk food. This means they probably want finger foods that are easy to grab at their own convenience. Sure, with the adults in the room, you’ll also have your own junk food, and maybe a few healthy snacks amongst your food selection, but include your teen in the finger food decision-making. This may require a few deep breaths, but oxygen is good for you.

2. Play board or card games that teens will enjoy.

Sure, New Year’s Eve is a time for being together and celebrating another year, but vegging out on the television is not exactly ideal. Try involving them in a board or card game. Make it exciting. Try some old school games like Monopoly, Life, Hungry Hippo and even Twister! You could even try a game of Poker involving candy coins!

Amazon is one of the best places to find a wide variety of board games!

3. Interactive multi-player video games.

Because you’re “so old and not cool,” your teens will probably gravitate toward the game console. Instead of leaving them in their virtual world alone, why not make plans to have some pre-planned games.

There are plenty of games that teens and adults can play together on Xbox, PS(insert number), Wii, or whatever you have, that allows more than one person to play.

A few examples of exciting games for teens and adults are the Super Smash Bros. game and Mario Kart. If you don’t have a game console, you can usually find one available for rent at a local video and game rental store.

Please note that you may want to take out a game console rental a few days before as the New Year’s Eve is a busy time. If you’re unable to rent, then ask a friend if you can borrow the game console that you need.

Amazon has you covered for your gaming needs!

4. Try some karaoke.

Not everyone has an excellent voice, but amongst friends and family, it’s okay to belt out those notes. In fact, it’s fun! Your teen may be hesitant to participate, but surely, if their favorite songs are available to sing, you can count them in. Besides, a good laugh is always appreciated!

5. Include your teen in the midnight toast.

Sure, your teen isn’t of age to participate in a champagne or wine toast, but sparkling cider is available and include them in the New Year’s toast. Additionally, you can try other sparkling juices to offer throughout your New Year’s Eve get together.

BONUS: Allow everyone at your New Year’s Eve family celebration share with the group at least one resolution that they want to start for the new year.

Hopefully your teen will love your New Year’s Eve plans after you’ve tried some of these out.
