Mini 31 Day Homemaking Challenge

Well, another new year is quickly approaching! So as we head right on into January, I thought it was a good time to introduce a Mini 31 Day Homemaking Challenge. For 31 days you will be challenged to accomplish tasks that will help you get your home in order.

Don’t panic yet! I know it can be hard, especially after the holidays getting back into the swing of things. Maybe you’re struggling with jumping back into a homeschool routine, maybe you’re struggling with where to start and transform your prayer life, or maybe your struggle is with homemaking.

Maybe you don’t struggle, per se, but just want some motivation to stay on track and get back into the swing of things following all the holiday parties, Christmas gifts and family time. It can be draining and difficult to snap back into it to say the least.

Whatever your why, I really believe this 31 day mini homemaking challenge is perfect for this time of year or anytime of year you need a reset. So let’s jump right into it.

 

Day One: Begin with a Journal

To start this challenge on the right foot, you will begin with your first journal entry. Answer this question: Why are you doing the 31 day homemaking challenge? Putting your WHY in writing is extremely motivating. If you want, you can even create your own journal to use for this challenge.

 

Day Two: Clean the Sink

You will be tackling one of the toughest areas in the home – the kitchen sink. With dishes needing to be washed every day, this task can sometimes be the most frustrating. My day always feels so much better when I have a clean and empty kitchen sink. Make it shiny, too! A clean sink is the start to a clean kitchen. 🙂 

 

Day Three: Clear out a drawer in the kitchen.

Scan through your kitchen and determine which drawer needs the most attention. Clear everything out, clean it, and reorganize it. Maybe you have multiple “junk” drawers. Well, if you’re feeling motivated, keep going. We aren’t going to limit you. However, the reason I suggest ONE drawer for this mini challenge is that we want to keep you motivated for the FULL 31 days.

Day Four: Journal Entry

Reflect on how you feel about day two and three accomplishments. I know this might be silly to you, especially if you’re not used to writing all the things down like I am. However, this is almost like your War Room. It is a check list of what you have accomplished so you can look back and reflect – just like a list of prayer requests that have been answered. 

 

Day Five: Clean the Refrigerator

Clear everything out, throw away anything that you no longer need or that has expired, and wipe the refrigerator clean. It is a daunting task, but a necessary task nonetheless.

 

Day Six: Mop the Kitchen Floor

Take some time today to sweep and mop the kitchen floor. Grab a sponge and get up close and personal with any stubborn stains. 

 

Day Seven: Journal Entry

Answer these questions: How does the kitchen look? How do you feel about the kitchen? How do you feel after 1 full week of this mini homemaking challenge?

 

Day Eight: Declutter a Corner

We all have that one corner in a room that collects random things and is desperately needing some TLC. Pick one corner and declutter. Take some before and after photos to record your progress. The next time you’re journaling, you can even stick the pictures there as part of your progress.

 

Day Nine: Grab a Bag

Grab a plastic bag and walk through each room throwing away anything that is garbage. You won’t believe how much you can pick up just with a quick walk thru. 

 

Day Ten: Clean the Sheets

This is a day to throw all the sheets and blankets into the laundry. Make sure to make the beds when you are done! Clean sheets help give a restful, peaceful sleep.

Day Eleven: Clean the Toilet

Clean the inside and outside of the toilet. Make sure it is shining like a throne fit for a queen or king. 

What do you do if you have multiple bathrooms in your home? Pull up your sleeves and clean them all.

 

Day Twelve: Deep Clean the Tub

Spend today getting the bathtub looking, feeling and smelling clean. 

 

Day Thirteen: Journal Entry

Answer this question: How do you feel about your home thus far on day 13 of the 31 day mini homemaking challenge? Add in any pictures you have snapped of your journey! 

 

Day Fourteen: Break Out the Duster

Look in areas where dust is hiding such as shelves, fans, and vents and get rid of the dust. Did you know dust mites are a leading cause of allergies?

 

Day Fifteen: Grab the Windex

When was the last time you cleaned the windows? Grab some glass cleaner and a towel and make those windows sparkle. Don’t forget the window sills. 

 

Day Sixteen: Search Recipes

Today you can take a break from the cleaning and find three new recipes that you would like to add to your cookbook.

Day Seventeen: Clean the Sofas

Today you will take the cushions off the sofa and love seats and clean in, on, and under the sofas. You may find some VERY interesting things, especially if you have kids. You also might find yourself a little richer with the loose change that may be lurking in and under your furniture.

Day Eighteen: Scrub the Walls

Sometimes our walls get neglected, especially when you have children with sticky hands. Take a sponge and get rid of those unsightly smudges.

 

Day Nineteen: Organize a Closet

Pick a closet and start organizing. If there are items that you don’t use, then consider throwing them into a donation pile.

 

Day Twenty: Create a Meal Plan

Think ahead for this coming week and create a meal plan for each day. If you are at a loss, I have you covered with several meal plans already completed. 

 

Day Twenty-One: Clean Appliances

Clean and shine up the appliances today. This can include the stove, microwave, coffee maker, and dishwasher. Don’t forget those Instant Pots and Air Fryers! 🙂 If you need some great cleaning supplies, I can’t recommend Thrive Market enough!

 

Day Twenty-Two: Create a Budget

Look at your bills and go over your budget. Where can you save some money on your current budget?

 

Day Twenty-Three: Polish the Wood

Grab some polish and give any of your wood furniture, mantels, or staircase railings a good polish.

 

Day Twenty-Four: Clean the Towels

Grab all the towels that are not clean from the bathroom and kitchen. Wash, dry, fold and place them where they go.

 

Day Twenty-Five: Maintenance

Scan the house and check that all the lights have working light bulbs and batteries are working in the smoke detectors. Make a list of any purchases you will need to make.

Day Twenty-Six: Journal Entry

Answer this question: What does it mean to be a homemaker? This may sound like a loaded question, but be honest and continue writing until you’re satisfied with your feelings. 

 

Day Twenty-Seven: Organize Your Bedroom

Your bedroom is your sanctuary. Spend today decluttering and organizing your room.

 

Day Twenty-Eight: Cook one of your Recipes

Pick a recipe that you and your family will enjoy and take the time to create it. If you’re at a loss, here’s my recipe collection.

 

Day Twenty-Nine: Your Choice

Pick an area in your house to transform. You may have thought about moving the furniture around, or there might be an area that still needs to be decluttered.

 

Day Thirty: Create a Cleaning Schedule

Now that you have seen some of the areas that need to be addressed in your home, you can create a cleaning schedule to make sure you can get to each location throughout the week or month.

 

Day Thirty-One: Look at Your Progress

Walk through your home and observe the areas where you had completed your challenge. Pick up your journal and write out your thoughts on how the Mini 31 Day Homemaking Challenge went. Where are your strengths and where can you improve?

 

This challenge focuses on the many different areas of homemaking. It is not just about cleaning. It is about maintaining your home, developing daily habits, and organizing your life. When finished with the challenge, you may want to follow up with a prayer walk through of your home.
