Typically, yes. There is usually some sort of crust that the pie sits in and it might even have a “pie” crust covering the entire top. But since this recipe is keto-friendly, there isn’t going to be any type of bread or crust found in this recipe.
And honestly, it’s an ingredient that you really don’t need. While many people find comfort in eating it with a crust, I can assure you that it’s really not necessary.

What goes with Shepherd’s Pie?
Shepherd’s Pie is a full meal in its entirety. But if you want to add in some other veggies or a simple side salad, there’s nothing standing in your way other than air and opportunity. Plus, if you want to swap out the meat, you can. I’ve also made Shepherd’s Pie using lamb meat and my husband has made it using venison. You always have options with this versatile meal.
What country does Shepherd’s Pie come from?
While I’m certain that Americans would like to claim this one, we can’t. It’s actually a dish that comes from the United Kingdom. In their country, traditional shepherd’s pie is made using lamb. Since there is typically a crust that keeps in the ingredients, this dish is referred to as a “shepherd” since they are what keep the sheep in place as well.
How do you reheat shepherd’s pie in the oven?
If you happen to have leftovers, you’re going to want to make certain that you reheat it to where it’s a good temperature to consume. Putting it in the oven at a lower heat for a longer period of time will allow it to heat slowly without drying it out or burning it. A lower temperature of 180 degrees or so for about 40 minutes should be a long enough time to have the entire pie hot and safe to eat. To be on the safe side, always check the internal temperature after reheating. It should be 160 degrees or hotter to ensure the meat is safe for consumption.
You can reheat this in the microwave as well but it will zap it fast and might cause you to overheat the dish that you’ve been trying so hard to keep light and moist.

Crisp Lid Keto Shepherd’s Pie
Serves – 4
Ingredients to make shepherd’s pie:
1 lb. of Lean Ground Beef
1 medium Onion, chopped
4 fat cloves of Garlic, minced
1 large (or 2 small) zucchini, diced
1 cup of Crushed Tomato (½ of a 15 oz. can)
add 1 tablespoon of Soy-free Worcestershire Sauce
1 tablespoon of Olive Oil
2 cups of Instant Pot Mashed Cauliflower
Salt and Pepper to taste
Sauté the beef until browned.
Add zucchini, onions, and garlic and sauté until softened.
Add the crushed tomatoes and let boil.
Add mixture to a greased casserole dish.
Add the mashed cauliflower to the top of the beef.
Top with shredded cheese.
Place inside the MultiPot.
Attach the Crisp Lid on top of the Multi-Pot insert and air fry.
Serve and enjoy.

Allow this dish to cool at room temperature for a few minutes before diving in and taking a bit. It will be hot.
Some say I have weird taste buds, but I always like to add a bit more Worcestershire Sauce to the top of my bowl of Shepherd’s Pie. It is an acquired taste, so if you decide to try that, I suggest to use it sparingly. There really is a ton of flavor to this delicious dish so I can promise you that adding in a bunch of extra ingredients isn’t really necessary at all.
Not only is this a super simple recipe to make, but it’s also one that allows for easy cleanup. All you need is one appliance!
I don’t know about you but I think that dinner always tastes that much better when I know that I don’t have a ton to clean up in the end!

- 1 lb. of Lean Ground Beef
- 1 medium Onion, chopped
- 4 fat cloves of Garlic, minced
- 1 large (or 2 small) Zucchini, diced
- 1 cup of Crushed Tomato (½ of a 15 oz. can)

- Turn the Multi Pot on the ‘Sauté’ mode and wait for the display to say “HOT”.
- Add olive oil, followed by the ground beef. Break up the meat using a wooden spoon. Sauté for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring constantly, until the beef is browned and crumbly.
- Add the diced zucchini, chopped onions and garlic to the browned beef and sauté for another 2 to 3 minutes, or until the onions and the zucchini softens.
- Add the crushed tomatoes and mix well. Let it come to a boil and then simmer it for 2 to 3 minutes until most of the liquid is gone.
- Liberally grease a 1 quart casserole dish. Add the beef mixture and smoothen the top.
- Dollop the Instant Pot Mashed Cauliflower on top of the beef mixture. Spread the mashed cauliflower evenly.
- Add the shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top.
- Place the tall trivet inside the insert of your Multi-Pot. Place the Crisp Lid Basket on top of the trivet.
- Place the casserole dish in the Crisp Lid Basket.
- Put the Crisp Lid on top of the Multi-Pot insert.
- Air Fry at 325 F for 12 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Serve hot.
