Air Fryer Keto Bang Bang Salmon Cakes

One of my favorite things is when a recipe is easy AND healthy. These Air Fryer Keto Bang Bang Salmon Cakes tick both of those boxes. The usually mild salmon gets a kick from this delicious Keto Bang Bang Sauce.

After my weight loss surgery years ago, I had to find recipes that were delicious to eat but were good for me as well. This is one of those recipes. It is so flavorful, so delicious, and so satisfying!

 

I have so many memories of eating salmon cakes as a child. And like a lot of children, I smothered my food in ketchup, including salmon cakes. I continued that tradition with ketchup into adulthood…that is until I discovered bang band sauce! This Keto Bang Bang Sauce makes for a much tastier meal plus it’s so much healthier than ketchup. You mix the sauce in the patties but you can also save some for dipping.

This recipe is low-carb and high in protein. It’s an excellent option for anyone trying to lose weight, those trying to increase their protein intake, following a keto friendly diet, and diabetics. Fish, an especially salmon, is a great source of B-12, Omega 3, antioxidants, and other vitamins and minerals that are good for the heart. 

 

I gravitate to any recipe where I can use my Air Fryer. The Air Fryer creates a crisp outside on these salmon cakes with a moist inside without the oils leftover from baking.

So glad you asked! Keto Bang Bang Sauce is incredibly easy to make and partners well with all kinds of seafood and other meats. Since it’s homemade, there’s no guessing what ingredients are included in the sauce.

Unfortunately, you won’t find how to make it here. I know, it’s cruel and I’m sorry. You’ll have to check out my recipe for Bang Bang Sauce!  I must warn you. This sauce is highly addictive! Can I use fresh salmon instead of canned?

Absolutely! In regards to fresh salmon versus the canned variety, the big difference will be cooking time. Be sure that the salmon cakes are fully cooked through and reach the FDA recommended temperature of 145 degrees.

You can also precook the salmon filets to medium (about 125 degrees) before making the salmon patties, and then proceed with the recipe as shown.

There tends to be a misconception that canned salmon isn’t healthy for you. While it’s usually best to eat fresh foods, canned salmon is actually very high in protein and contains lots of vitamin D, calcium, and omega-3 fats (the healthy kind). It’s all about preference and each person has a unique palate. Either way, you won’t go wrong with canned salmon.

Are the bones safe to eat in canned salmon?

They definitely are! Canned salmon is made by pressure cooking the fish so the bones are soft enough to eat. They are also a great source of calcium.

I know it may be strange to eat the bones, but if you’ve eaten canned salmon in the past and didn’t know bones were in the salmon, you’ve more than likely eaten the bones. Especially when they are mixed into a salmon cake recipe like this one.

If you really can’t get past the bones, then you can crush them before you mix up the salmon and other ingredients.

 

Can I bake the salmon cakes instead of using an air fryer?

You can bake salmon cakes or cook them in a skillet on the stovetop. However, I much prefer the air fryer over either of those methods. The air fryer is the only one that gives me the crisp coating all the way around the salmon cakes. Not to mention I’m saving a lot of time with an easy clean up by using the Air Fryer. Using the skillet can be messy! 

Have I mentioned how much I love my air fryer?

I only have unsalted butter. Can I use that in a pinch?

It’s best to use salted butter for this recipe. However, if you only have unsalted butter, don’t fret. You can either run to the store and purchase salted butter, or you can use what you already have in your pantry – salt. Just add a pinch of salt into your salmon cake mixture before you patty them out.

If you don’t add in the extra salt to unsalted butter, it’s not a deal-breaker as far as the recipe goes; but it could very well be the deal-breaker in regards to taste. Your salmon cakes will more than likely be very bland or even bitter. 

My kids are picky and don’t typically like fish. Should I still try this recipe?

I get it. I’ve had battles of will with my kids over what I’ve cooked for dinner. I have found that kids are creatures of habit and if you cook it and they get used to it, they usually will give things a try. My kids all love salmon cakes and have eaten them for years! But it took time. 

I think the key is to find unique recipes that your family loves and test out new recipes often. If your child doesn’t like the bang bang sauce, you can always go back to my childhood favorite – ketchup!

The Best Air Fryer Keto Bang Bang Salmon Cakes

Just mix these ingredients together, pop them in the air fryer, and there you go! Some of the best salmon cakes you’ll eat.

Instructions for Air Fryer Keto Bang Bang Salmon Cakes

In a bowl, mix the drained salmon, almond flour, keto bang bang sauce, drained pimento, chopped spring onions, melted butter, and the egg. Stir them well.

Using a cup scoop, form the patties from the salmon mixture. I was able to make 10 patties using a 1/4 cup scoop.

Take a bit of spray oil and lightly spray the air fryer basket.

You can work in batches. Place the salmon patties in a single layer and spray lightly with oil spray.

Set your air fryer to 370F for about 10 minutes.

Repeat with the remaining patties.

Air Fryer Keto Bang Bang Salmon Cakes

Air Fryer Keto Bang Bang Salmon Cakes are the perfect recipe to add to your rotation! Delicious, full of protein, low carb- healthy BUT still tastes amazing!

Ingredients

  • 4 (5 oz.) can of boneless, skinless salmon, drained
  • 2 tablespoons of Keto Bang Bang Sauce
  • 1 (4 oz.) jar of diced pimento, drained
  • 2 heaped tablespoons of Spring Onions, chopped
  • 1 large Egg
  • ¼ cup of Almond Flour
  • 2 tablespoons of Salted Butter, melted

Instructions

    1. In a large bowl combine the drained salmon, almond flour, keto bang bang sauce, drained pimento, chopped spring onions, melted butter, and the egg. Mix well.

    2. Using a ¼ cup scoop, form equal-sized patties from the salmon mix. We got 10 patties.

    3. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil spray.

    4. Working in batches, place the salmon patties in a single layer and spray lightly with oil spray.

    5. Air fry at 370F for 10 minutes.

    6. Repeat with the remaining patties.

    7. Serve immediately with more Keto Bang Bang Sauce for dipping.
