Holiday Grinch Punch

The Grinch was written back in 1957 right after Cat in the Hat was released. It’s a classic tale of someone being grumpy around the holidays, but ultimately failing because the joy of the holidays is too great to overcome. They see the error of their ways once their outlook has been changed by the community and that still, small voice in their heart. The Grinch’s famous green color was actually based off of popular color for rental cars around the time it was created.  The color fits perfectly and has become a symbol of the classic movie and matches the colors of the season.

Common Questions About Holiday Grinch Punch

Why is Punch Called Punch?

Punch actually originated in Persia with the name “panch.” The original drink consisted of water, rum, lemon, herbs, and sugar. The drink became popular and slowly made its way around the world. It reached Mexico first and then eventually found its way into Europe where it gained the name “punch” as we know it now. Another name for this drink is “ponche” which is popular in Spain. Punch is now a widely used term in the US and many other countries, whether it’s more similar to the original concoction or similar to this concoction. Punch, in general, is usually just sweet juices mixed together. Sometimes it’s carbonated and other times it’s not.

What is the Flavor of Fruit Punch?

Fruit punch is probably one of the more widely used punches across the world. It’s a mixture of pineapple, cherry, and cranberry juices. Fruit punch is usually just a mixture of these juices and doesn’t often include sherbet or other ingredients. It’s also not usually carbonated like some punches might be. The red color of fruit punch comes from the cherry and cranberry juices.

Who Invented Fruit Punch?

Although the idea of punch first originated with the Persians, fruit punch was created in 1934 inside a garage by Ralph Harrison, Tom Yates, and A.W. Leo. It was meant to be an ice cream topping with the consistency of syrup. However, it turned into what we commonly know today as Hawaiian or fruit punch.

Tips for Making Holiday Grinch Punch

  • If you don’t have Sprite or prefer not to use that brand, any lemon-lime soda will do. If you prefer not to use soda, sparkling water should work. Make sure it’s a flavor that blends well with the recipe.
  • If you prefer not to use food dye, the punch will still be green due to the sherbet, it just won’t be the same lime green that more closely matches the character.
  • Coating the rims of the glasses is optional and in no way will deter from the flavor of the drink if not utilized. The red is simply used to signify the heart of the Grinch.

If you’re looking for a super easy, but cute drink for your holiday get-togethers or just for the kids during movie time, this recipe is perfect. It takes only a couple of minutes to toss together and is great for time crunches. Grinch Punch has quickly become one of our favorite things to make each year when the holidays roll around.
