Can you use another type of deli meat?

You bet. Whatever deli meat tickles your fancy, just grab it. Personally, I use ham when substituting bacon. I don’t know, there’s just something about the way ham tastes in this recipe. I’ve also used turkey and even deli-sliced chicken breast. Both of these meats also taste great in this recipe.

Changing just one ingredient helps put a new spin on a tried and true recipe. It’s almost like creating a new recipe if we’re being honest. It’s also a great way to add different flavors to this low-carb snack.

Ingredients needed to make Easy Bacon Pinwheels (Low Carb)

6 slices of Deli Sliced Black Forest Ham, preferably Low Sodium
1 (8 oz.) tub of Whipped Cream Cheese
½ teaspoon for coarsely cracked Black Pepper
1 cup of Baby Spinach
5 to 6 slices of thickly sliced Bacon

How to Make Low Carb Easy Bacon Pinwheels

To begin with place the bacon slices in the air fryer basket and air fry at 400 F for 8 minutes or until they are to your level of crispy. Everyone has their own preference for this.

Now let the bacon cool and then chop into large bits.

Then put a piece of cling wrap on the counter. Arrange the ham slices in a rectangle, with the slices slightly overlapping each other.

Then spread the whipped cream cheese evenly over the ham slices.

Now sprinkle the cheese with coarsely cracked black pepper.

After that is done arrange the baby spinach on top of the cream cheese.

Finally, you can sprinkle the chopped bacon.

The cling wrap is important because you can use the cling wrap as a guide to roll up the ham slices. Then cover tightly with the same plastic wrap and chill for at least 2 hours.

After chilling is complete you will remove the plastic wrap and slice it into 1-inch slices.

You will want to serve immediately or keep in the fridge if serving immediately isn’t possible.

Tips for Making Low Carb Pinwheels

I used store-bought whipped cream cheese. It is a lot easier to spread. If you have a cream cheese block, let it soften to room temperature, and then whip it with an electric beater.

Because the ham and the bacon are both salty, I skipped the salt and added just coarsely cracked black pepper. But you can add a slight sprinkle of salt along with the pepper if you really desire to do so. I don’t think it needs it though.

Ways to Cut Down on the Fat Content

If you’re following a low-carb diet, but also trying to cut down on your fat content, you can make this recipe using turkey bacon instead of regular bacon. It will still cook up nice and crispy in the air fryer and have a ton of great flavor, too.

Can you add more veggies to this pinwheel recipe?

You can! There is always room to sneak in extra veggies! I know that this recipe calls for spinach, but you can easily shred up some carrots, slice or dice onions, bell peppers, or even go a little spicier with jalapenos. I also love banana peppers. Honestly, the sky is the limit and it all depends on your taste buds.

And if you’re not getting the number of veggies from this recipe that you want, you can always prepare a side dish of veggies to accompany it.
