Chronological Listing of G.A. Henty Books!

I drooled over the GA Henty books for many years.  I had heard so much about them from other homeschool moms and knew they would be a great asset to our family.  Roughly three years ago, I found the collection on sale at an excellent price and my husband bought me the entire set with his income tax return.  When the set arrived, I was as giddy as a child opening a new present.  My intention was to implement the books immediately into our homeschool curriculum.  However, as the Army would have it, we endured more military moves and those plans were shelved along with the books.  The great thing about retiring from the Army is no more moves.  Alas, the books are coming off the shelves and we will be incorporating the GA Henty collection this year!

I decided to begin this year with Ancient History.  If you start in chronological order with Henty’s books, you will travel through history all the way to 1900!  While these books are perfect for my boys, I don’t see why they’re not perfect for girls, neither.

GA Henty was born in 1832 near Cambridge, England.  He was the second of four children and attended Westminster School.  He began his storytelling career with his children.  He would tell them a story after dinner that would last an hour or two and continue to the next day.  Some of his stories would even last two weeks!  After watching Henty interact with this children during story time, a friend of his suggested he write his stories.  Henty went on to became a war correspondent after his wife and two of his children died of tuberculous.  Eventually, he published Out of Pampas in 1871; it was his first break aimed at a juvenile audience.  Henty was a true Christian of good character.  He lived his life of Christian standards and values and his characters represented what he believed.  Henty went on to publish 144 books and numerous short stories for magazines.  His nicknames included “The Prince of Story Tellers” and “The Boys Own Historian.”

Although the books were not in chronological order when I received them, I compiled a list that the set easy to use.  These books are excellent for homeschoolers.  However, if you are not a homeschool parent, I encourage you to check them out and read them with your kiddos!  They would be wonderful for any child to have.

  1. We own a whole bookshelf of Henty books, and I’ve sometimes used those books as a backbone for a unit study on a time period in history. Jim Hodges does awesome voices on his Henty audio recordings, and you can cover more books that way, especially for auditory learners.

  2. Thank you for sharing this! This will be soo helpful to know when my daughter gets to the age where I can consider homeschooling 😀
