Homemade Carpet Deodorizing Powder Using Essential Oils
If you have carpet in your home, I am sure you already know that carpet isn’t always the best smelling thing in your home. I have created this super affordable and easy homemade carpet deodorizing powder that helps freshen up the carpet and your home.
I have gone to lay down on the floor to stretch my back or to lay down with the kids and watch television to find our carpet has a stale smell especially since we have a dog. It is like it has captured the smell from dinners, pet odors, foot traffic, and much more.
When I smelled this I knew I had to find an all-natural way to get our carpets fresher. That is when I turned to this carpet deodorizing powder. I love using essential oils and I love finding natural ways to help our family, too!
Essential Oils Are A Natural Deodorizer
With the use of baking soda and your favorite essential oils, you can create this in a minute, sprinkle it onto your carpets, let it sit and then vacuum it up. It will make your home smell AMAZING and leave your carpet fresher. You can even do this to rugs you have around your home!
The best part of all is you can create any scent mix you like. I have a few favorites I like to use that I will list below if you need some help. I love using my Essential Oils. It seems like since I have started using essential oils I can’t tolerate chemical smells from cleaners, carpet powders, and other products. They seem to give me a headache shortly after. Using essential oils in new, creative ways is perfect for me.
My Go-To Scents for Carpet Deodorizer Powder
I add around 10-15 drops of essential oil mixed with 2 cups of baking soda. I prefer blends as well as just one single scent. I change it up depending on the season. Personally, I use the oils from Rocky Mountain. I love their customer service and quality oils! Here are some of my favorite scents:
- Jasmine and Orange
- Mint and Orange
- Clove and Cinnamon
- Rosemary and Lavender
- Eucalyptus and Spearmint
You can use any blend or single essential oil to create your powder. I like to use more spice inspired scents like peppermint or the clove and cinnamon in the winter and lemon for more spring and summer. I also use the lavender in the bedrooms as it is so soothing and calming and helps give you a sleepy feeling, which is great for bedtime!
One other thing I will add is when you strip down your beds to wash the linens, you can sprinkle this mixture onto your mattress, let it soak in for 30 minutes and then run your vacuum over the mattress. This will help remove any dander, odors, and clean your mattress. I do this at least 2 times a year.

- First, you want to mix up the essential oil with the baking soda. I use a spoon or fork and stir it around, working working it into the baking soda.
- Then put in a glass container that has a lid. When you go to use it, generously sprinkle onto your carpet, rugs, or mattress and let sit for 15-30 minutes.
