Apple Gouda Grilled Cheese (Air Fryer or Crisp Lid)
There’s something about a grilled cheese that brings back a flood of memories that our momma or granny made for us as kids. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way as it’s a popular topic on the internet. Of course, many people like to pair this crispy sandwich with soup to sweeten the deal. I definitely enjoy a good cup of tomato soup paired with a quick grilled cheese, which is a classic across many age groups.
My husband has perfected the grilled cheese. Sure, I might have a biased opinion, but he seriously has perfected it. He’s been teaching his secrets to our youngest son. They’ve begun a tradition that will continue throughout our lineage.
I decided to get fancy with my grilled cheese and came up with this Apple Gouda Grilled Cheese. It definitely mixes things up from the normal classic. The textures and flavor combinations are unique and not something most people are used to. It’s one of those recipes you bite into and surprisingly end up loving.
A while back I spoke to you about a company called Mealthy. Mealthy has pressure cookers now that are AMAZING but they also have the coolest gadget called the CrispLid. This handy device gives you the ability to turn any pressure cooker 6 or 8 ounces by any brand, instant pot, Cosori, Mealthy, etc into an air fryer! So I had to try it for this recipe below-
How Do You Make Apple Gouda Grilled Cheese?
You’ll want to crisp up your bacon in the air fryer before assembling the sandwich. Butter both sides of your bread and put a slice in the air fryer, then layer on the cheese, bacon, and apple slices. Top that with one more slice of cheese and a dab of butter before placing the final slice of bread on top. Crisp up the sandwich in the air fryer and you’re set with a delicious flavor combination packed into one sandwich.
Tips for Making Apple Gouda Grilled Cheese
You’ll want to be careful when assembling each layer in the crisp lid. It’s important to be gentle about it.
Be sure your apple and cheese slices aren’t too thick. The cheese flavor will be overpowering and the apples may not be finished enough.
You can use another cheese if you don’t like gouda, but keep in mind that gouda pairs really well with apples.
Serve with tomato soup or another soup for a full dinner idea.
Common Questions About Apple Gouda Grilled Cheese
Is Gouda Good with Apples?
You’ll notice that I specifically used Granny Smith apples for this recipe. This is because gouda pairs extremely well with tart apples. It’s not terrible with sweeter apples, it’s just not as good. If you’re not a fan of gouda, it’s possible you won’t like it with apples either. However, try it with apples before closing your mind to it. Gouda is a delicious cheese that is popularly used for a reason. Apples are only one food it pairs well with.
Is Muenster Cheese Good for Grilled Cheese?
When making grilled cheese, a sharply flavored cheese is usually desired. For this reason, Muenster is a great choice when making grilled cheese. Some of the other great choices are Colby, Monterey jack, and blue cheese. If you love a specific cheese, you’ll most likely rave over it being on your sandwich.
What Cheese Goes Best with Green Apples?
Gorgonzola cheese and blue cheese are usually the two top choices for granny smith or green apples in general. However, gouda ranks in the top five when it comes to cheeses that pair well with green apples as well. Of course, cheeses similar to those listed would also pair well.

Apples don’t have one basic flavor across the board, just like cheese doesn’t. Each one has its own unique flavor and, for this reason, each apple type has a specific cheese type that it pairs well with. As mentioned above, gouda, gorgonzola, and blue cheese go well with green or granny smith apples. Honey crisp apples go well with brie and provolone. Golden delicious apples go great with camembert and gruyere. Gala apples go well with swiss and cheddar. Some of these cheeses pair well with other apples also. The best way to find out which you like best is to taste test.
