What is a Hand Pie?

Some of you are new to baking and to the air fryer, so you may be wondering what a hand pie is, to begin with? This is typically a pastry that is made by using dough and a dollop of a filling. Hand pies are perfect because they’re so tiny, yet so fun to eat.

 

If you want to make a variety of pies, then hand pies are the way to go. A hand pie can also be made by the dozen. This means you just make the same hand pie over and over again.

What is the Pie Crust Made Of?

The crust in this recipe is homemade. However, there have been many pie crusts recipes roaming around that are made out of biscuits and store-bought dough. This pie crust works wonders because it’s so easy to make!

 

If you’re new to making hand pies, make sure you follow my recipe to make it easier on yourself. After using hand pie crust, you may not go back to anything else.

How Do You Store Hand Pies?

Are you curious about how to store hand pies? This is simple. If there isn’t any dairy in the pie, you can leave it at room temperature for at least 2-3 days. If you plan on storing it for longer, you’ll need to move it to the fridge. 

 

Of course, when it’s in the fridge, you’ll need to move it to an airtight container. From there, you can take out each hand pie and enjoy it as you see fit.

Ingredients

  • 1 box (2 rolls) of store-bought soy-free Pie Crust (like Simple Truth)
  • 24 candy eyes
The Filling
The Egg Wash
  • 1 Egg White
  • 1 teaspoon of Water
The Cinnamon Sugar

Instructions

Separate the egg. We will use the yolk in the pumpkin filling and the whites in the egg wash.

In a large bowl cream together the cream cheese, pumpkin puree, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, nutmeg, and the egg yolk.

Lightly flour a work surface and gently roll out the pie crust. Cut off the crust to form a rectangle of about 12 inches by 9 inches. Save the scraps to make the mummy bandages.

Cut the rectangle dough into 6 equal rectangles. Repeat the same with the other pie crust

Place a heaping tablespoon of the filling to the center of each rectangular crust. Using the back of a spoon, spread out the filling, leaving about a half-inch border around the edges.

Cut the dough scraps into thin strips and place them on top of the filling at various angles to create the “mummy bandages”.

Whisk the egg white with a teaspoon of water and brush all over the “mummy pies”.

 

Mix white sugar and cinnamon to make cinnamon sugar. Sprinkle all over the “mummy pies”.

Grease the air fryer basket. Place a couple of mummy pies in the basket and air fry at 350 F for 8 minutes.

The moment the “mummy pies” comes out the air fryer, carefully place two candy eyes and press them gently to adhere to the filling.

Repeat with the remaining prepared “mummy pies”.

  • 2 oz. of Cream Cheese

  • 1/8 teaspoon of ground Nutmeg
