Not only that, but they’re made using gluten-free bread crumbs and soy free, gluten-free hot dog buns! With having kids, I’m always on the lookout for comfort food. And after years and years of looking, I decided the best way to find comfort food that my family can enjoy is to just make it myself instead. This is especially true since we have a child with a soy & food allergy. As much as we love carnival food, street vendor fair & state fair foods, it isn’t always easy to get foods my youngest can eat there since removing soy.
So this recipe was born as I was messing around in the kitchen one day while thinking about a fun memory from the state fair. My mind works in mysterious ways! I came up with allergy friendly chicken tenders before, and they are amazing! I had come up with hot dog buns that were soy free that he can enjoy.
Soooo what if I combined the two for a wonderful, yummy, comfort of street vendor, carnival food, and state fair food- all wrapped up, served at home.
Besides, adding “state fair” to the name gives it a fun twist and makes you feel like you’re enjoying food while reliving those childhood memories of being at the fair. But who says you have to go to the fair to get that taste and flavor? With this recipe, you don’t! Just close your eyes and envision cotton candy, the ferris wheel, and games.
Are these state fair air fryer chicken tender hot dogs spicy?
They do have a little bit of kick to them and that’s because of the added cayenne pepper. If you’re not a fan of spicy, just omit and move forward with the other ingredients. But if you are a fan of spicy, add in more if you want!
Are there actually any hot dogs used in this recipe?!
Nope, and that’s what makes it so fun! It’s the illusion of a hot dog. This dish is filled with a chicken tender instead. How fun is that?! What a great way to surprise your family and friends! Can you omit the hot dog buns altogether?
Absolutely. But then they really don’t have that “hot dog” aspect and you’re serving chicken tenders instead. However, if you’re wanting to eliminate carbs and bread from your diet, change it up to fit your needs. You can use a lettuce wrap instead and still have that same great taste and flavor come through with each and every bite.

State Fair Air Fryer Chicken Tender Hot Dogs
Ingredients needed to make these chicken tenders
1.25 lb. of Chicken Tenderloins (8 count)
1 cup of Buttermilk
1½ cup of Gluten Free Breadcrumbs (I make sure these are soy free as well)
1 teaspoon of Celery Salt
½ teaspoon ofGarlic Powder
½ teaspoon of Onion Powder
¼ teaspoon of Cayenne
½ teaspoon of crushed black pepper
3 tablespoons of raw Honey
2 teaspoon of Yellow Mustard
2 teaspoon of Stoneground Mustard (There is a no salt option:)
¼ cup of diced Red Onion

Instructions to make this State Fair Air Fryer Chicken Tender Hot Dogs
Soak the chicken tenders in buttermilk for 10 to 15 minutes.
In a bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and the celery salt, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne and black pepper. Whisk it well.
Pick up one chicken tender, shake off the excess buttermilk and roll it in the seasoned breadcrumbs. Keep it aside on a separate plate.
Repeat with the remaining tenders.
Place a few slices in the lightly greased air fryer basket in a single layer. Lightly spray the prepared tenders.
Air fry at 370 F for 15 minutes, flipping at the halfway mark.
Repeat with all the prepared chicken tenders.
While the chicken tenders are air frying, in a small bowl combine honey, yellow and stoneground mustard, and mix it well.
To serve: Slice open the warm hot dog buns lengthwise.
Place an air fried chicken tender in the bun and top with the prepared honey mustard and diced red onion. Serve immediately.

Honestly, I’d only worry about keeping the chicken frozen for later. You can whip up the rest in a jiffy to use it right then and there, so there’s no real reason to waste the time in getting it all prepped to freeze. Just make certain that you have your chicken unthawed and ready to go when you’re ready to cook this recipe.
